Oh no! Hope you can recover or recreate it without too much pain and time.
I have this background anxiety that directly corresponds to how many lines of code have not yet been committed to git and pushed to a remote.

Forgot to commit before switching branches/discarding?

:( oh fuuuuudge. I am finding though it is easier to re-write the second time.

I pulled my changes aside thinking it would be easier to copy and paste it into the code instead of merge it (wrote three massive procedures). Then my VM crashed and when it started back up the files were gone.... oy stupid.

Brutal. :( No chance of running something like photorec to recover it?

I have the opposite problem where I’m so irritated that I’m redoing work that it’s very difficult for me to summon up the motivation to actually write it again.

Nope. Just re-write.

Well, at least it’ll be easier the second time round, right?

Easier to rewrite.TTake you 1/4 of the time.
But this is how you learn to commit early and often, push when you can and use the reflog if you must.
